Some great resources for using LinkedIn

Filed under: Careers — Sean Harry @ 4:16 pm

I am quickly approaching my 300 direct connection on LinkedIn. That’s quite an accomplishment — made even greater considering that I won’t add someone to my LinkedIn list unless I have met with them at least once face to face. I want to have quality contacts whenever possible. I want to use my LinkedIn contacts to help people connect for business and/or other meaningful opportunities. I can honestly say that I have met 99% of my connections face-to-face. Many I consider to be close friends!

If you are considering using LinkedIn to increase your “brand you” awareness, to make connections, or just to catch up with friends, you may be interested in these resources:

If you want to connect with me on LinkedIn, give me a call. Just remember, we will have coffee (or lunch) first.

Get ready for the Interview — IMPROV

Filed under: Careers — Sean Harry @ 5:02 pm

I just got this email from a friend who is holding an improv class. Job seekers ought to attend! There is some much you can learn from improv and you’ll be much more ready to ACE the interview! Here’s the email. . . . then follow the link and see how

– email –
It’s finally happening…

That improv class I’ve been talking about for ages is finally coming into being!

We’re going to start with Sunday’s from 5-7pm on 10th & E. Burnside. We will meet each Sunday and have FUN while learning! This class is not about “performing” and you don’t need any experience (or comfort) in performing to come, EVERYONE is welcome. You will get in touch with your creativity and having a great time with like minded people!

Side benefits to improv:
Exercise your “core” through laughing (who doesn’t want tighter abs?)
Express yourself more quickly (never be taken off guard again)
Be more confident everyday (Yes! And…)
Expand your creativity!!!

Let me know if you have any questions or if you’re interested in attending and I’ll send you more information and get you signed up! All this great stuff for $10/class!

Feel free to pass this along to anyone you know who might be interested.

The MOST In-effective Method for Finding a Job

Filed under: Careers — Sean Harry @ 8:01 am

I talked to a good friend over the weekend who told me she has given notice to her employer and will be looking for a new job. I was happy for her, because she hasn’t liked her job for a long time. Then she told me something that made me cringe – “I have put my resume on the “big job boards” and expect to have a new job within the month.”

Uggggggh! Ouch! The “big job boards” are THE MOST INEFFECTIVE WAY TO FIND A JOB, and my friend is relying solely on them to pay next month’s mortgage. Only about 2% of the people who use Monster find a job that way, and the other boards aren’t much better. Yet, so many people put their future into the hands of these folks.

Before YOU put your fate in the hands of the “big boards”, I suggest you re-read the article from “Ask the Headhunter”!

If you REALLY want to find a new job, the MOST effective method is NETWORKING. What are YOU doing to grow your network? What are YOU doing to take care of those who will help you find your perfect Career Position?
